Orange Margarita

20 minutes

Today we’re making an orange Margarita! A refreshing cocktail with a hint of orange—because, as you know, I live in Valencia. Valencia is Spain’s orange capital, and with this orange Margarita, I hope to let you enjoy a little bit of the Spanish sun.

What goes into a classic Margarita cocktail?

The Margarita is a classic cocktail loved worldwide for its refreshing and well-balanced flavor. The drink consists of three simple ingredients: tequila, triple sec (an orange liqueur), and fresh lime juice. Tequila forms the base—usually blanco or reposado—which adds a bold character. Triple sec offers a gentle sweetness with subtle orange notes, while the lime juice provides a refreshing, tart touch that brings the flavors to life.

A distinctive feature of the Margarita is the salted rim of the glass. The salt not only adds an extra layer of flavor, but also helps to mellow the cocktail’s sharpness, creating a perfect balance between salty, sweet, and sour.

The Margarita can be served in various ways: with ice (on the rocks), without ice (straight up), or as a frozen Margarita, in which the drink is blended with ice until it reaches a slushie-like consistency.

What is the origin of the Margarita cocktail?

The origins of the Margarita are shrouded in various legends, but the most common story traces its origins to Mexico in the 1930s or 1940s. Some claim that the drink was created by a Mexican bartender in honor of a dancer named Margarita, while others believe it was a natural evolution of the popular tequila-based cocktails of that era.
